Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) - is a progressive disease that makes breathing difficult due to damage to lung tissue and narrowing of the airways. According to the WHO, COPD is one of the leading causes of death in the world, but it can be prevented and effectively treated with timely diagnosis.
What causes COPD?
The main reasons are:
- Smoking (active and passive);
- Polluted air (including occupationally harmful substances);
- Previous history of respiratory tract infections, particularly in childhood;
- Genetic predisposition (e.g., alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency).
Symptoms:
- Constant, prolonged cough (often with sputum);
- Shortness of breath, especially in the morning and during physical activity;
- Whistling sound while breathing;
- Constant fatigue and weakness.
Treatment and prevention:
Treatment of COPD depends on the severity of the course (assessed by symptom and dyspnea scales), the frequency of exacerbations, and includes:
- Quitting smoking is the main step to improving your condition;
- The use of bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory drugs (prescription of drugs ONLY by a doctor);
- Respiratory rehabilitation (exercises to improve lung function);
- Oxygen therapy in severe cases.
It should be noted that most modern, highly effective medicines for the treatment of COPD can be obtained free of charge under the Affordable Medicines of Ukraine program.
How to prevent COPD?
- Don't start smoking and avoid staying in polluted places;
- Get regular medical checkups;
- Strengthen your immune system through healthy eating and physical activity;
- Get vaccinated against influenza and pneumonia.
Expert advice from Olga Tolokh, head of the pulmonology department at the Lung’s health center:
“At the first sign of shortness of breath or chronic cough, be sure to consult a specialist. Although it is impossible to cure COPD completely, early diagnosis and proper treatment (physiotherapy and pharmaceuticals) can alleviate symptoms, increase resistance to physical activity and improve the overall quality of life.”
At the Lung’s health center, you will receive quality care, consultations from experienced pulmonologists and a full range of services for the diagnosis and treatment of COPD.
