The theme of the event: Establishment of microbiological laboratories for the diagnosis of tuberculosis and ensuring biological safety in their work

Type of event: training

Location of the training: 5/8, Zamkovyi Maidan, Zhytomyr, Ukraine 

 

The training is part of the project ‘Supporting TB Control Efforts in Ukraine’.

Target audience: Managers and employees of bacteriological laboratories for tuberculosis research.
Specialization:
- Bacteriology;
- Clinical laboratory diagnostics;
- Microbiology and virology.

Purpose of the event: - discuss with the heads and employees of bacteriological laboratories the requirements of the new regulatory act “On Approval of the State Sanitary Norms and Rules ‘Arrangement of Microbiological Laboratories for Tuberculosis Diagnostics and Ensuring Biological Safety in their Work’. within the framework of the Project ‘Support to Fight Tuberculosis in Ukraine’.
- familiarize yourself with international and national approaches to implementing biosafety measures in laboratories;
- learn how to plan, consistently implement and monitor infection control measures in healthcare facilities with limited resources;
- to consider practical examples of organizing biosafety measures in laboratories.

List of competences to be acquired or improved (learning outcomes):

- skills in working in a laboratory for microbiological diagnosis of TB and biosafety
- Conducting an infection risk assessment in the TB microbiology laboratory;
- proper use of UVB capabilities - radiation and ventilation;
- rational use of personal protective equipment;
- Implementation of improved hand hygiene;
- carrying out disinfection measures
- Medical waste management

Description of the event structure:

Event format: offline.

Duration of the event: two training days.
The structure of the event:
 - theoretical part is presented in the form of reports/presentations by trainers, demonstration of
skills;
 - the practical part will include the development of practical skills on specific
topics.

The total amount of study load: 18 hours

Forms of organising and holding the event: 

Implementation of the planned programme, use of active learning methods, involvement of participants in discussions and practical exercises, evaluation of the results achieved (testing, surveys).

Methods of organising and conducting the event: Lectures and presentations, discussions and debates, practical exercises, skills training, demonstrations and examples.

Logistical support for the educational event: 

Multimedia equipment and flip charts are used to demonstrate presentations.
The following equipment is used for the practical part:
- different types of ultraviolet bactericidal irradiators and UV radiometer, protective goggles;
- laboratory ventilation system, thermoanemometer, vanemometer, smoke generator, laser rangefinder;
- UV lamp and fluorescent solutions for assessing hand hygiene;
- a set of high-quality fit test and respirators;
- personal protective equipment kits for all employees, including medical gloves, a surgical mask, goggles, and a gown that protects against infectious agents.

Forms of final control: 

Solving 24 test tasks that cover the entire scope of the event material with one correct answer. To successfully pass the control assessment and receive the relevant certificate, the trainee physician must correctly answer at least 70% of the test tasks.
